FUTA workers protest against non-payment of salary arrears

The Federal College of Know-how, Akure department of the Senior Employees Affiliation of Nigerian Universities, on Tuesday staged a protest in opposition to the non-payment of wage arrears by the Federal Authorities.

In the course of the protest, which happened in entrance of the primary entrance of the college alongside the Akure-Ilesa freeway, members of the union sang a number of solidarity songs. A few of them carried placards with numerous solidarity songs, together with: ‘Save our souls from the cabal within the presidency, pay our salaries’, ‘Mr. President, direct the Accountant Normal of the Federation to pay our salaries’, ‘Authorities’s insensitivity to the plight of the employees is an act of irresponsibility’, and others.

Non-teaching employees of the Federal College of Know-how, Akure, have staged a peaceable protest to demand the discharge of their 4 months’ salaries which have been withheld by the Federal Authorities since 2022.

Commenting on the event, Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council of FUTA, Felix Adubi, mentioned the protesting unions might not assure industrial concord in Nigerian universities.

The union chief regretted that of the 4 college unions that went on strike in 2022 and whose salaries have been withheld, just one was paid by the federal authorities.

Adubi said that the union wouldn’t cease protesting till the federal government granted their request.

He mentioned: “The divide and rule system of the federal government shouldn’t be acceptable to us. We name on Mr. President to fulfil his promise. We implore Mr. President to do what is critical earlier than the straw breaks the camel's again.

“Mr. President has promised that there can be no disaster in Nigerian universities. We are able to not assure industrial concord if Mr. President fails to do what is critical.”
